Known as the "Bluegrass State" for the rich and deep color of the land, with
mountains in the east, hills in the north, Bluegrass in the center, western
coal fields and fertile plains in the southwest. Manufacturing, coal,
construction and agriculture are the states principle industries. The 15th
state of the union, when it entered on June 1, 1792, Kentucky was the first
state west of the Alleghenies settled by Americans in 1774. Daniel Boone
trailed the Cumberland Gap in 1775 and settled Fort Boonesborough. The
British enticed Indian raids throughout the region until their defeat in
1778 and in 1792 Virginia dropped its claims to the region, paving the way
to statehood. Several major attractions include: The Kentucky Derby;
Mammoth Cave with 300 miles of explored passage ways, 200 foot high rooms,
blind fish and Echo River, 360 feet below ground. Famous Kentuckians
include: Muhammad Ali, John James Audubon, Daniel Boone, Louis D. Brandeis,
Henry Clay, Jefferson Davis, Abraham Lincoln, Adlai Stevenson and Zachary
Taylor. @
